Category Business Spotlights

The Evergreen Gallery is celebrating its 35th year in Downtown Evergreen. The gallery is filled with handmade work from award-winning Colorado artists and is known throughout the country as a favorite “don’t miss” destination filled with whimsical, elegant, and beautiful artworks. Gorgeous kaleidoscopes, dazzling glass, and stunning jewelry are just a few of the favorite things.

The Evergreen Gallery

Beth Riser is the fourth female owner of this juried gallery. It first opened in 1987 by Meryl Sabeff, a talented potter. Although slowing down producing her ceramics, Meryl is still showing her work in the gallery.

In September 2011, Lisa Mallin became the next owner. Lisa was an employee at The Evergreen Gallery for many years prior to buying the business, therefore the choice to become owner was a natural “yes!” She eventually decided to retire in May 2017, and asked Beth to become the next owner, knowing of her deep involvement in the local art scene.

Beth grew up in Winchester, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with English and Studio Art degrees, focusing on fine art photography. She moved to Evergreen in August 2010 after moving around with her two daughters and her husband, a retired Air Force officer. She immediately leapt into the local Evergreen art scene with the guidance of a few new friends. This led her deeper into the community by being active in several local non-profits. Beth was also an assistant director to the well-loved Evergreen Fine Arts Festival in Hiwan Grove from 2014-2017.

Beth and her employees enjoy curating and displaying the art around the gallery to make it a wonderful experience for all visitors. “The best part of owning this gallery is the excitement of when a local artist delivers their new work. The creativity and talent of each artist is incredibly inspiring and to spend time with these lovely people brightens the day,” says Beth. “It’s also exciting when a customer purchases that one piece that will make them happy. Often, they are already hugging it as they bring it to the sales counter.” Most of the artwork in the gallery expresses some form of happiness, warmth and beauty.

When you think of “Shop Local,” this gallery truly embodies that idea as it supports nearly 100 Colorado artists and several local employees. The Small Business of the Year was awarded to The Evergreen Gallery in 2021 by The Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce.

With a wealth of experience and amazing mentors throughout her life, Beth followed the steppingstones that led her to where she is today, with Evergreen allowing her to naturally utilize her knowledge and so many personal skills. She pays it forward by joyfully sharing knowledge with artists, as well as young employees and interns at the gallery, as well as new local business owners. It all fits together seamlessly for her and feeling grateful that it’s not ending yet. Opportunities are continuing to unfold in front of her that contribute to our community. More to come!
